Kelly’s second climb of the evening was no more pleasant than the first, but this time something aside from fear drove her. Rock-hard determination.

She’d beaten the odds by getting this far. She’d be damned if she’d give up now.

Finally, her hand reached for another niche and instead hit air. She bent her wrists, groping for something solid and found it—another flat space. Hopefully, more than just another landing.

Praying she wasn’t just pulling herself to a second pit stop on a never-ending climb, she strained upward, using her legs, fingers and pure will to lever her body over the cliffside and onto flat ground.

She lay panting on the dirt, her eyes closed.

A roar split the night air, shaking the ground beneath her. Rocks from above peppered Kelly, sharp little strikes like birds pecking at her flesh. With a gasp, she curled into herself and rolled onto her feet, into a crouch.

More rocks hit her head and back, got trapped in her hair. Cursing, she flattened her palm and called for the lit sphere. Within seconds, a softly glowing orb formed. She held up her hand and muttered a second prayer. In the dim light she could make out a path curving up a steep hillside and a small overhang at its beginning.

She half stood and sprinted, still bent at the waist, toward the small protected area. New sound broke through the night. Men yelling in a language she didn’t recognize and then the ping of metal against metal. Another roar, but lower this time. More of a growl—full of menace, but blessedly lacking in the destructive volume of the first.

A few last rocks pattered down the hill, then silence.

The orb still glowing in her palm, Kelly stepped out from beneath the shelter and stared up the path.

Every survival instinct in her being screamed for her to turn and run the opposite direction.

Must mean this was the way she had to go.
